2903 community service self-reflection

I started volunteering in October 12th at a place called Future Center, this place deals with children that have special needs and need support from adults to function normally. The center is located in Mohammed Bin Zayed .

The best part of volunteering for me was that when I was starting a new experience in life, and this was special because I wasn't doing something for me only, I was helping children. The children I was in charge of were five children, four of them had autism and one had down syndrome. I also loved interacting with the children and helping them do simple stuff such as drawing or writing . Furthermore I always enjoyed helping people, so knowing that I made a difference in these kids life
even if were small makes me happy and proud of myself.

My volunteering efforts helped the community by bringing awareness to a cause that not a lot of
people are aware of, despite people knowing about disabilities and how they affect humans, they are not very aware of special needs children who should be handled differently than the average child. Furthermore, when I volunteered I helped the children do tasks that made it easier for them to do because I believe that even special need children need to at least experience one fun experience for them to feel comfortable. I also read for the children stories and helped them with their work in school and interacted with them despite the communication limit between us I still managed to understand them.

Working with special needs children taught me that they are just like normal children, they misbehave and want attention from adults just like any child. They want to feel loved and cared for by adults because they need to feel love and safety or else they will start to act out and make problems for everyone around them. I also discovered a caring and gentle side of me that I never knew existed till I .started working in the center, and I learned that patience is the best tool to care for children
